Improving Resilience at Work

As more and more is asked of people at work, performance and wellbeing are suffering.

At its simplest, wellbeing is how good or bad, or how positive or negative, we feel, particularly about ourselves.  But more and more people at work are not feeling good about themselves.

Stress, depression and anxiety are estimated to cause more working days lost than any other work-related illness. Sick pay reduces profits. Covering absent workers adds more pressure. Loss of valued and talented people costs more than money.

Here are some of the symptoms of over-stressed and depressed people at work:

  • Working slowly
  • Making mistakes more often
  • Unable to concentrate
  • Forgetful
  • Late for work or meetings
  • Not turning up
  • Getting into disputes and arguments with colleagues
  • Unable to delegate tasks

When people feel good about themselves performance improves in many ways, they:

  • See the big picture and think creativity
  • Create and articulate compelling visions
  • Resolve complex problems
  • Make their case through better verbal reasoning
  • Build relationships through improved social skills
  • Be more trusting of others
  • Deal more constructively with criticism

Wellbeing at work has been demonstrated to greatly improve productivity and financial performance.

Resilience at Work Programme

Resilience at Work is a development programme that teaches the tools and practices people need to survive and thrive in today’s challenging climate. It comprises 4 half-day modules which build sequentially to develop inner strength and resilience.

We recommend the programme be delivered in 2 x 1 day workshops separated by 2-4 weeks. In between the workshops and for 2 weeks after, participants receive email support and access to an online support and learning community.

The 4 modules, which last 3-3 ½ hours each, are:

Module 1: Building Inner Strength and Confidence
People often depend on their material possessions or job role for their sense of self esteem. However the effect of these is hard to sustain and often leads to stress and reduced performance, particularly when things are not going well. During this module participants will learn:

  • To increase and maintain self esteem and self efficacy
  • To build self confidence in the face of challenge
  • To access more of their creativity and imagination

As a result people will have the confidence to bring more of their true self to their work and life in general in a more balanced way.

    Module 2: Personal Stress-Proofing
The pressure of work can lead to stress, overwhelm and feelings of powerlessness. Working ‘full on’ over long hours depletes our batteries, causes superficial thinking and leads to depression. During this module participants will learn:

  • Practices for mindfulness in the face of the busyness of work
  • To be more appreciative of self and others
  • Tools to access the positive psychological effects of gratitude

As a result of being able to recharge batteries and maintain a calm presence, the physical and emotional effects of stress can be avoided and greater problem solving skills accessed.

Module 3: Harnessing the Power of Emotions
Emotions are at the root of conflict particularly when people are stressed and overwhelmed. People react as if on automatic in ways that create further stress for themselves and are hurtful to others. During this module participants will learn:

  • To respond rather than react to emotional challenges
  • To remain ‘stable under fire’
  • To create more meaningful and honest communication
  • As a result greater emotional intelligence will help avoid conflict and create a more harmonious and productive work environment for all.

    Module 4: Discovering your Purpose
Having meaning and purpose is a key contributor to happiness and wellbeing. Without clear purpose, people lack motivation and have difficulty concentrating. During this module participants will learn:

  • To create new meaning and direction for their life and work
  • To be clear about what’s important and motivating to them
  • To stay focussed and on track
  • As a result of appreciating the importance of their contribution, people will have increased motivation to stay on purpose and achieve their own and the organisation’s goals.

The programme cost is £295 per person including all materials, email support and online community. Venue and meals/refreshment costs are additional.

The programme is suitable for 10-20 participants of all levels and can be run onsite or at offsite venues.

The programme leaders are Mike and Patricia Bell. They have extensive international experience delivering 2 year advanced personal development programmes from which Resilience at Work is distilled. Mike’s background includes personal, leadership and organisational development with Procter and Gamble. Patricia worked as manager and team leader in the financial services industry and has a wealth of coaching experience.

Participants from recent organisational programmes gave the Everyday Wellbeing programme, from which Resilience at Work is distilled, an overall evaluation score of 9/10 and reported:

“Everyday Wellbeing has definitely had an impact on my work. I take more time in trying to understand a personal situation by looking at the whole picture. “

“The respond and react tasks worked well. In my work young people can be challenging and react to your reaction and can lead to a situation that could have been avoided.”

“I gained more insight and clarity about my role in my work and how I can bring intelligence to my work. Awareness of the surroundings (colleagues, policies, resources etc) and how to harness them for the betterment of the organisation and it s people.”

“I feel as if I have the tools to deal with conflict in the workplace. The course has helped me manage stress at work and make me feel more in control of my work load.”

“I am less judgemental of others – this has lead to more productive relationships at work.”

“The programme has enabled me to use my gifts more effectively. It has had a positive impact on my energies and interactions within my work role.”
